Chapter Six

“So how was your date?”

I held up my finger and wagged it like a dog’s tail. “Nuh-uh. First you’ve got to tell me about your hair. What the heck, Rapunzel? Are those like seven feet extensions?”

Her hair was a lighter shade of blonde than mine, almost white-blonde, and hung past her waist and swung like a thick rope. There wasn’t a man in The Enchanted Forest tavern that wasn’t checking her out.

“Do you like it?” She glanced over her shoulder. “It almost touches the floor!”

“Do I like it?” I squealed with her. “It’s fantabulous. But seriously how long is it?”

She shrugged. “At least four feet. I wanted something different. It’s bad enough I’m stuck in that ivory tower all day with only one window to look out and scarcely a visitor to come see me.”

“The life of an academic can’t be easy,” I said.

“I just didn’t think it would be this lonely.”

“Maybe you’re just so intellectual that no one else feels smart enough to come up to your office in the tower and problem-solve with you,” I said.

Rapunzel purposefully shook her head so her new, longer locks would be the envy of everyone in The Enchanted Forest, academic or not.

I elbowed her. “See, that’s the spirit. Besides, if your new hair doesn’t get someone up to that tower, I’m not sure what will. Though,” I said and lifted my martini glass toward her, “your hair is so long now you could just toss it out the window of your office and let some man climb up to you.”

She raised her glass and gently clinked it against mine. “To discovering new ways of meeting men.”

We both took a long, slow sip of our Appletini.

“Oh, that’s yummy,” I said.

“Yeah, Doc hired a new bartender, Snow something, and that girl can mix up a martini. Apples are her specialty. It’s her poison.”

“Right.” I took another sip and slowly glanced around the tavern. It was hopping for a Wednesday night. “Where’s Ariel? I thought she was meeting us, too?”

“Oh, yeah, I meant to tell you. She texted that her boss, Sebastian, was keeping her at work and she’d be running late. Apparently the guy’s a real crab,” Rapunzel said.

“Bummer. I always like our weekly get-together. Same bar, same barstool, it’s our thing.” I placed my martini glass down on the bar with a little too much force.

Doc looked at me from the other end of the bar and shook his head.

“Sorry,” I said in his direction and then leaned toward my bestie and spoke under my breath. “And I thought his brother Grumpy was hard to deal with. Sheesh.”

“Okay, little miss redirect,” Rapunzel said. “You’re not getting out of spilling the beans about your date with Mr. Honey Pot wine … what’s his name again?”

“Dylan.”

“Oh, that bad, huh?”

“What?” I raised my shoulders and my eyebrows defensively.

“The drop in your voice? I thought you were excited about this Bear guy.”

I drew a deep breath. “I was excited,” I lowered both my shoulders and my eyebrows.
